“Identify Me: Interpol’s Operation to Solve Cold Cases of Women Victims of Violence in Belgium, Germany, and Netherlands”

Set up in collaboration with the international criminal police organization Interpol, the operation is called “Identify Me” and is supported by some famous women from the participating countries such as Axelle Red or Veerle Baetens.

To support them in their mission, its three instigators have brought together the 22 wanted notices on a single website accessible to all: www.interpol.int/IM.

Thrown into the canal

Two of these 22 cases directly concern the Liège region. First of all, there is the one concerning the discovery of the body of a young woman in the Albert canal in Visé May 31, 2009. The findings of forensic scientists showed that she had been killed with violence, with several stab wounds. “His body would have remained in the water for 1 to 5 weeks”, indicates Interpol. “His body was weighed down with two weights (dumbbells, editor’s note) of the brand “Alex”. It is estimated that she was between 14 and 24 years old and was 1.62 meters tall. She had an athletic build, medium length blonde or light brown hair, fair complexion, good teeth, and pierced ears. »



She wore artificial nails. On both ring fingers, the artificial nails were adorned with a floral pattern. She had a surgical scar on her lower abdomen and on her right wrist. The scar on the wrist is regarding 10 cm long. The investigation revealed that the young woman had lived in the Benelux region for several years and that she had spent her childhood in Eastern Europe.

A skeleton in Cointe

The second, more recent case concerns the discovery, on August 29, 2019, of the partially calcined skeleton of a woman in the park of Cointe. A composite portrait of the victim was established by specialists from the federal police.



The victim is of African origin and would be between 35 and 45 years old. She is small and measures approximately 1m60. She has braided hair and perfect teeth.

She wore a jacket whose buttons bear a monogram with the letters “HCC” whose C’s are intertwined. It might be that its buttons come from the French navy. The sleeve of a garment had 5 braided ropes.

All victims of violence

“Nobody knows who they are, where they come from and why they ended up in Belgium, Germany or the Netherlands, sometimes years ago”, announce the police who specify that in almost In all cases, “these women were victims of acts of violence”.

The launch of the operation is supported by famous women from the participating countries. In a video, they call on the public to provide names and information regarding unknown women. Belgium is represented by Veerle Baetens and Axelle Red. They are accompanied by Dutch actress Carice Van Houten (Game of Thrones) and singer S10, as well as German boxing champion Regina Halmich and sports journalist Katrin Müller-Hohenstein.
