The streaming market seems to be reshaping itself from the pandemic period, when several new services debuted. Now, Disney Plus (which lost regarding 3 million subscribers recently) has announced that it will join Hulu, a service not available in Brazil, on the same platform in the US by the end of this year.
Plans to merge those streams, plus ESPN Plus content, were cited on a second-quarter earnings call on Wednesday. The consolidated service would dispense with different subscriptions by different parts of users, aiming for a unified experience, according to CEO Bob Iger.
Currently, each of these services is sold in different packages and from logins in different apps. Iger also said that standalone subscription options will still remain available. In countries other than the US, Hulu series and movies can only be viewed on Disney Plus. In the UK, Hulu is not available as a separate app, and a subset of the brand’s offerings can be found within the Disney Plus interface.
The company didn’t announce any immediate details on pricing for the upcoming unified app. In the US, a Disney Plus and Hulu bundle with ads is $9.99 per month, while an ad-level Disney Plus, ESPN and Hulu bundle is $12.99/month. For $19.99 a month, you can get a package including all three where Disney Plus and Hulu are ad-free.
Disney has already been the majority owner of Hulu since 2017. Comcast still owns a 33% stake in Hulu, but the company officially ceded control to Disney in 2019 and agreed to a planned future sale. Disney can buy Hulu’s remaining shares starting in early 2024, and Comcast has the ability to force the sale for a minimum of $9.2 billion.
