One in three overweight or obese children in Europe: ‘We must act now’, says WHO

The wives of 16 European heads of state adopted the Zagreb Declaration on Wednesday in the Croatian capital, certifying their political commitment to tackling childhood obesity. According to the WHO, the situation is reaching “epidemic proportions“in Europe, one in three school-age children is overweight or obese.

Figures that are likely to increase further, according to the “World Obesity Atlas 2023“. According to projections, a total of 28 million children aged 5 to 19 will be obese by 2035, which might cost Europe 800 billion dollars a year in the years to come.

Obesity is thought to lead to more than 1.2 million deaths each year in Europe and is the cause of cardiovascular disease, cases of diabetes, respiratory disease and cancer. Faced with this situation, the WHO has identified three specific fields of action: prevention from an early age, better regulation of the food industry and the promotion of regular physical activity.
