The Sankei Shimbun reported today that the Japanese government has begun coordination in the direction of holding a Korea-Japan and Korea-US-Japan summit on the 21st, the last day of the Hiroshima Summit of the seven major countries that will open on the 19th.
If the Korea-Japan summit is held separately on the 21st, it will be held three times in regarding two months, following on March 16th and the 7th of this month.
On the 21st, President Yoon Seok-yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida will visit and pay their respects at the Korean Atomic Bomb Victims’ Cenotaph in Hiroshima Peace Park.
The Korean Atomic Bomb Victims Association estimates that regarding 50,000 Koreans were victims of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945 following crossing over to Japan from the Korean Peninsula through forced labor, of which regarding 30,000 died.
No South Korean president has ever visited the Hiroshima Korean Atomic Bomb Victims Memorial, and as Japanese Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi has visited in 1999.
