Three of the five largest airports in the Netherlands processed more travelers last quarter than before the corona crisis, but that did not apply to Schiphol. There, the numbers lagged behind because the number of flights had to be cut due to staff shortages. This is evident from figures from Statistics Netherlands.
The five airports – Schiphol, Eindhoven Airport, Rotterdam The Hague Airport, Maastricht Aachen Airport and Groningen Eelde – together welcomed fourteen million travelers in the first three months of this year. That is almost 40 percent more than a year earlier.
It shows that aviation is recovering from the corona blow. We are going on holiday more often and business traffic is also increasing. As a result, the airports near Eindhoven, Rotterdam and Maastricht even saw passenger numbers rise above pre-pandemic levels last quarter.
For example, there were 7 and 28 percent more travelers in Eindhoven and Rotterdam respectively than in the first quarter of 2019, the last year before the corona crisis. Maastricht Aachen Airport even saw a doubling compared to four years earlier.

Travelers avoided Schiphol
How different is that at Schiphol. In the first three months of this year, 21 percent fewer travelers came there than before the corona crisis. This had everything to do with the capacity problems at the airport.
Schiphol has been struggling with staff shortages for a year now. As a result, the airport had to cut the flight schedule. In addition, because of the problems, some travelers decided to avoid Schiphol and fly via another airport.
The airport near Amsterdam is still by far the largest in our country. Of the 14 million travelers in the first quarter, 12.3 million flew via Schiphol, or 87 percent.
