Sharjah: Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority has taken important steps to ensure road safety in the emirate. The authorities have decided to install smart signboards at important places like school zones, residential areas and pedestrian crossings. The project aims to control speed through smart speed detection system.
The authorities released information regarding the project through social media. The speed of passing vehicles will be displayed on the sign boards. If the speed is within the specified speed limit, then the speed will be displayed in green color and if it is out of the limit, it will be displayed in red color. Smiling emoji with green signal and sad emoji with red signal. The system is designed to reduce accidents in important and busy areas.
The speed limit in school zones in the UAE is between 30 and 40 km/h. Violations can result in fines ranging from Dh300 to Dh3,000 depending on how fast the motorist is traveling. In residential areas the limit is 25 to 40 kmph. In 2017, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority installed similar smart boards in school zones. This scheme has been assessed to have contributed to better risk management.
