“Newborn Deaths on the Rise: UNICEF Report Highlights Alarming Statistics”

Reports released by the United Nations UNICEF indicate that the death rate of newborns is increasing.

According to a survey report released by the United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, the death rate of newborns has increased in recent years. The organization released the shocking information that a newborn baby dies every 40 seconds in the world. According to the Born to Soon study conducted in 2020, regarding 13.4 million babies were born prematurely and regarding 1 million children died due to complications.

The organization describes near death as a ‘silent emergency’. Premature birth, region, income, and ethnicity are also cited as causes of premature deaths. Reports also show that only one in 10 premature newborns survive in low-income countries, compared to more than 9 in 10 in high-income countries.

Preterm birth rates are highest in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. Premature infant mortality rates are also high in these regions. The report also points out that the impacts of conflict, climate change, environmental degradation, the coronavirus pandemic and related health problems, and the rising cost of living are increasing the vulnerability of women and children everywhere.
