The Eurovision Song Contest 2023 in Liverpool begins on Tuesday (May 9) and Thursday (May 11) with the ESC semifinals.
Ten nations from each semi-final qualify for the ESC final on Saturday (May 13), for which the Big 5 plus last year’s winner Ukraine have already been determined.
On Tuesday, the first ten participants qualified for the final show – including Sweden and Finland. The second semi-final will take place on Thursday. Austria is also part of this.

When is the ESC semi-final 2023?
The Eurovision Song Contest semi-finals will take place in Liverpool on Tuesday and Thursday 9th and 11th May 2023. The entire event including the final on May 13 will take place at the M&S Bank Arena.
The semi-finals start at 9:00 p.m. German time. Thanks to the one-hour time difference, it is then 20:00 local time in the venue, Liverpool.
Before midnight it will be clear which ten nations will prevail on both days and qualify for the final.

As expected, Sweden entered the 2023 ESC final with Loreen and Finland with Käärijä.
The Scandinavian duo has been the big favorites for overall victory at this year’s Song Contest for weeks and thus also before the first qualifying round. They more than lived up to this role in the first semi-final.
With Norway and Israel, two other nations have qualified, which were predicted to be very likely to reach the final in the ESC semi-final forecasts. Likewise the Czech Republic and Moldova.

Switzerland with Remo Forrer was considered a shaky candidate in some predictions, but was ultimately able to get one of the ten final tickets from this semi-final.
With Malta, Ireland, Azerbaijan and Latvia, four nations were eliminated, which were only seen as outsiders for the advancement for the first semi-final. With the Netherlands, on the other hand, a nation had to say goodbye that was believed to be capable of a place in the final.

2. ESC Semi-Finals 2023 – Start List & Order
While there are 15 participants on the starting list in the first semi-final of the ESC, there are 16 in the second semi-final. This is why the show on Thursday lasts five minutes longer than two days before.
According to the official start list, Denmark will kick off the second ESC semi-final. On the starting list you can find Reiley with the song “Breaking My Heart”. However, the Scandinavians are not among the favorites to reach the final this year.
Austria with Teya & Salena will start at position 13 and therefore quite late. A perfect time for the audience to remember the song before voting.
The contributions from Australia and Cyprus will be exciting. With Voyager and “Promise” in 16th place on the grid, Australia completes the second preliminary decision.
2. ESC semifinals – who will make it to the ESC finals in 2023?

It may come as a surprise to some that Austria’s ESC chances in 2023 are surprisingly good. Before the second semi-final, the duo Teya & Salena with their song “Who the Hell is Edgar?” is the top favorite for the final.
For Austria, progressing to the final is taken for granted. The odds are just over 1.00.
The first pursuer in the ESC semi-final forecasts by the bookmakers is Australia on Thursday. But the song from Down Under is already far behind that of the Alpine Republic.

The ESC semifinals will be broadcast completely by ONE in Germany in 2023. It is the subsidiary of the ARD, which can also be received free of charge.
However, you have to scroll down the program list a little further to find the channel. Because only the ESC final can be seen in the first.
The transmission on ONE begins on Tuesday and Thursday at 8:15 p.m. and thus immediately following the news.
In Austria, the ORF is there and broadcasts the ESC semi-finals on the main broadcaster ORF 1 on TV.
The decision in the semi-finals will be made on May 9th from 10:50 p.m. and on May 11th from 10:45 p.m. German time.

Germany not represented in the semifinals – but can vote
Like the other four nations of the Big Five (Italy, France, Great Britain and Spain) and last year’s winner Ukraine, Germany is not represented in the ESC semifinals. All six are automatically qualified for the final thanks to the important TV markets.
The German ESC contribution Lord of the Lost will therefore only be presented to an international audience for the first time on Saturday. After all, according to the bookmaker betting odds, there is legitimate hope that black-red-gold will do better this year than in 2022.
