Goldman Sachs has agreed to pay $215 million to end a lawsuit in which the American investment bank was accused of systematically underpaying female employees. The New York bank has reached an agreement with the lawyers of around 2,800 employees who had taken legal action.
According to a joint statement to the bank and the lawyers, Goldman Sachs will retain the services of an independent expert for three years who will analyze the procedures for evaluating employees and the opportunities for promotion within the bank.
The case broke out following a first complaint from Cristina Chen-Oster, who following studying at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), was hired in 1997 at the bank. She had filed a complaint in 2005 with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, a US federal agency fighting once morest discrimination in the workplace. She then targeted the bank directly with a complaint in 2020.
