Sharp is still doing its thing with the launch of the Aquos R8 Pro, a smartphone with breathtaking features… but not found elsewhere than in Japan.
After the Aquos R6, the Aquos R7… The Japanese manufacturer has always stood out in R&D with the first 240 Hz smartphone, the first borderless smartphone… and even the first dual-notch smartphone. The Aquos R6 had introduced a very large 1-inch sensor created in collaboration with Leica, before the Sony Xperia Pro-1. Additionally, its Pro IGZO OLED display was also a first.
Did you dream of it? Sharp did it! The Japanese tech giant has just unveiled its latest gem: the Aquos R8 Pro. This smartphone has impressive features that would make the biggest tech enthusiasts green with envy… provided you go and buy it in Japan, of course. Because as usual, Sharp likes to taunt us by not marketing its products outside the Japanese archipelago.
It seems that Sharp has decided to make us salivate by presenting us with what we can’t have. On the menu: a 1-inch sensor, a Leica Summicron lens and a 2,000 nit IGZO OLED screen. Just that !
To give you an idea of the beast, the Aquos R8 Pro sports a 6.6-inch 120Hz OLED Pro IGZO display, 2730 x 1260 pixel resolution and max brightness of 2,000nits. The main camera hasa 47.2-megapixel 1-inch sensor and a Leica Summicron lens with an f/1.9 aperture and 19mm focal length. Sharp has even pushed the vice by integrating a 14-channel spectral sensor for even more accurate color representation.
High end
On the performance side, the Sharp Aquos R8 Pro is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, accompanied by 12 GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 256 GB of UFS 4.0 flash memory. The selfie camera has a 12.6 MP sensor, and the battery offers a capacity of 5,000 mAh. The smartphone is also IPX8 certified, thus guaranteeing water resistance.
Sharp plans to launch the Aquos R8 Pro in Japan in July, but details regarding pricing and possible international availability are still a mystery. So, if you are ready to travel to Japan to get your hands on this incredible smartphone, prepare your suitcases and your passport. For others, it will be enough to dream and nourish the hope that one day, other manufacturers will take inspiration from one of the last Japanese behemoths of technology.
