Yesterday, Monday, Twitter CEO Elon Musk announced a plan to purge old Twitter accounts that have not been active for years.
This step also aims to give up old usernames, but many users in the social network have expressed concern regarding the move, as what will happen to the accounts of people who have died?
“We will be purging accounts that have not had any activity for the past several years, so they are likely to see a decrease in follower count,” Musk said in his tweet.
But Musk’s announcement was met with a backlash, with users saying that many social media sites are “effective digital graveyards” and noting that deleting the accounts of their loved ones is “like removing a headstone”.
Musk has made a number of changes to “Twitter” since he bought the company in 2022, including: the new program for the blue verification mark that forces users to pay an amount starting from $ 8 per month for “authentication”.
It is believed that Twitter’s new step in purging old accounts may also be in favor of Musk’s efforts to increase Twitter’s revenue, especially following the New York Times reported last January that Twitter was considering selling usernames to reap new revenue.
The newspaper then quoted informed sources as saying that Twitter employees held, during the month of December, at least, talks regarding selling some usernames. The engineers discussed running online auctions where people might bid on usernames.
As for unique usernames, they can be lucrative, as early adopters of social media platforms often grab them, and some people and brands offer to pay thousands of dollars for them.
It is noteworthy that Musk had tweeted in December 2022 that “Twitter” will soon start giving up namespace for approximately 1.5 billion accounts, indicating that inactive accounts will be deleted as part of this process.
It is also noteworthy that the new step coincides with the announcement that Twitter is studying a new plan to verify accounts for companies and institutions whose monthly fees do not exceed $1,000.
