Irvin wins for the first time; Nationals beat Giants

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Rookie Jake Irvin struck out five in 6 1/3 innings for his first career win to lead the Washington Nationals to a 5-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Monday.

In his second career start and first on the road, Irvin allowed no runs in a dominating performance for the Nationals, who remain in last place in the NL East.

The 26-year-old right-hander held the Giants to just four hits and was aided by defense that converted double plays in three of his first four innings. He walked three and lowered his ERA to 0.84.

It was a contrast to his major league debut once morest the Chicago Cubs when he hit a batter with his first pitch and went a no-decision with four walks in 4 1/3 innings.

Luis Garcia had two singles and had a multi-hit performance for the fourth straight game, CJ Abrams drove in two runs.

Joc Pederson homered for San Francisco, which lost for the second straight game following winning four in a row.

For the Nationals, the Venezuelan Keibert Ruíz 5-1. Mexican Joey Meneses 4-2 with a run scored and an RBI.

For the Giants, Venezuelan Thairo Estrada 4-1.
