The Southern African Development Community (SADC) decided on Monday (8 May) to send forces to restore peace and security in eastern DRC.
This decision came out of the special summit of the member countries of this sub-regional organization in Windhoek, Namibia.
The force of the SADC will thus be added to that of the EAC having taken over areas previously occupied by the M23 but failed to put an end to the insurgency in North Kivu.
But, the precise date on the deployment of this regional force and the number of contingents have not been announced.
SADC further recommended that Kinshasa meet the conditions required for a coordination summit of all intervening parties and all international actors on the ground in order to achieve effective and harmonized action.
Namibian President, Hage Geingob has called on SADC to work with EAC and other regional forces to support the Congolese government.
For his part, SADC Executive Secretary Elias Magosi stressed that the security situation in eastern DRC is worrying, with the deterioration of the humanitarian situation due to the resurgence of M23 and other armed groups.
In this summit, the DRC was represented by members of the government and the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC). These include the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Christophe Lutundula, that of Regional Integration, Antipas Mbusa Nyamwisi as well as the generals of the FARDC, headed by the Chief of Staff, the Lieutenant General Christian Tshiwewe Songesha.
SADC is made up of 16 countries including South Africa, Angola and Tanzania.
