“Fish Safety Check: A Comprehensive Report on Inspections in Ostend’s Fishing Industry”

A special action was carried out on April 28 by Afsca in Ostend where the entire chain from fishermen to fish dealers was checked. In addition to the minque, 11 FASFC inspectors also inspected 2 fishing boats and their docks, 5 processing establishments (where fish is processed and prepared), 5 itinerant merchants and 4 fishmongers. Eight transport vehicles were also stopped and checked on the side of the road.

The FASFC has inspected the main points likely to pose a risk to food safety. “It was thus checked whether the temperature regulations were applied, whether the general infrastructure of the establishments was in order and whether hygiene was observed.”

In total, 3 minutes were drawn up and 6 warnings were written. “The main non-conformities noted concerned infrastructure and hygiene (for example: equipment that did not seem clean enough, traces of rust, sinks that did not work, etc.). In addition, two remarks were also made regarding the temperature of foodstuffs and operators who were not properly registered with the FASFC”.

FASFC inspectors carry out inspections and sampling every year in different minques in Belgium (Nieuport, Ostend and Zeebrugge). The FASFC also carries out random checks on some 13,000 tonnes of fishery products in the minques (2021 figures). “In recent years, controlled products have always been declared fit for human consumption. In 2021, 98.2% of inspections in the fisheries sector obtained a favorable result.”
