A group of ministers in the British government warned once morest the consequences of not rushing to enhance security measures related to “WhatsApp” and fears related to the violation of privacy, amid warnings of the disappearance of the famous messaging application from the country.

The Internet Safety Act has been in the works for almost four years.

  • The bill would give the UK’s communications regulator power to impose requirements on social networks to comply with safety standards linked to terrorism or child sexual content, with fines of up to 10 percent of global sales for those who fail to comply with the law.
  • According to “WhatsApp”, the draft law violates its privacy policy related to encrypting correspondence between users.

Not at the expense of the public

We have to remember that they are global platforms, they have a system that works for billions of people all over the world, said Claire Fox, a member of the British House of Lords. “A relatively small market like the UK is not something that might put their billions of users at risk around the world.”

A Home Office spokesperson said: “We support strong encryption, but this cannot be at the expense of public safety.”
