MONTRÉAL, the 8th of 2023 /CNW/ – Faced with the confusion surrounding parking pricing schedules, Ensemble Montréal is asking the administration to reconsider its decision in order to respect the authority of the municipal council and not create a precedent. The Leader of the Official Opposition at Montreal City Hall, Mr. Aref Salemand the Official Opposition critic for economic development, Mr. Julien Hénault-Ratelle, announced during a press conference on Monday morning that they will ask at the municipal council on May 15 that the Tariff Regulations be amended to allow timetable pricing to be restored to that of 2022.
“The administration deserves a ticket for the way it manages parking pricing schedules. If she really wanted to consult her partners, she would have done so before voting for the change in the budget. The administration may say that it is a simple mess, the reality is that it tried to pass one quickly to the Montrealers. His idea is already made. It just has to figure out how to impose it on merchants and boroughs,” said Salem.
As proof, the request of the SDC Montréal Centre-Ville to hold a one-year moratorium on all changes to pricing schedules in the city center found no response from the administration, which instead decreed a moratorium. two weeks. In front, there wave of dissatisfaction with such a short delay, it would finally end at the end of the summer.
However, these multiple changes of course carried out on the sly pose many problems from the point of view of transparency, accountability and respect for the democratic and decision-making bodies of the City of Montreal. It should be noted that an amendment was adopted at the August municipal council so that the boroughs are consulted before any price change for parking terminals. By not respecting this resolution of the municipal council, Projet Montréal is going once morest municipal democracy. Ensemble Montréal also stresses that a moratorium must be accompanied by a duration, which is not the case at the moment.
“This is the first time that we have seen a moratorium with no real duration in Montreal. It is a non-transparent way of governing piecemeal. The application of a regulation cannot and should not be done in a variable geometry when the administration feels that it has made a bad decision. This is a dangerous precedent,” laments Julien Hénault-Ratelle.
For Ensemble Montréal, only one decision is necessary if the administration wants to be sure to respect both its partners and our municipal democracy: agree to amend the Tariff Regulations to restore parking pricing to the times of yesteryear.
