2023 is the European year of competence, Austria’s teaching serves as a best practice example
Vienna (OTS) – On the occasion of Europe Day on May 9th, the Young ÖVP calls for improvements in training and further education as well as EU-wide mobility in the “European Year of Skills”. The aim of the Year of Competence is to counteract the shortage of skilled workers at European level and to reduce unemployment.
“The Austrian apprenticeship model is one of the reasons why we in Austria have the second lowest youth unemployment rate in all of Europe. We must continue to strengthen this strong position. Comprehensive support for teaching is central to this,” says Secretary of State for Youth Claudia Plakolm.
In order to further upgrade the craft, the Young ÖVP is committed to a free master craftsman’s examination. “It is incomprehensible why you can get a degree for free, but pay 10,000 euros and more for a master’s examination,” said the State Secretary.
A further step is the recognition of civil service in the nursing apprenticeship. “Anyone who has already achieved and learned something should also be able to show it,” says Plakolm. Nursing apprenticeships will be launched across the board in the fall. The apprenticeship will last 3 or 4 years and ends with an apprenticeship as a nursing assistant or nursing assistant.
Youth unemployment in Austria is 7.6%, well below the European average of 14.3%. Youth unemployment is currently particularly high in countries such as Spain (29.5%), Greece (24.2%) and Italy (22.3%).
