After 36 years at the head of the Rhone club, the departure of Jean-Michel Aulas from the presidency of OL was made official on Monday morning. Over the years, he had established himself as a reference leader and was particularly recognized by his peers, as evidenced by the poignant tribute paid by Bernard Tapie in 2021 on the show Like never on RMC Sport.
A moment of deep respect between two of the most emblematic leaders of French football. In February 2021, eight months before his death, Bernard Tapie paid a vibrant tribute to Jean-Michel Aulas on the show Like never, presented by Mohamed Bouhafsi and broadcast on RMC Sport. Particularly strong words from the “Boss” who give an idea of what the Lyon leader represents, whose departure from the presidency of OL was made official this Monday morning following 36 years of good and loyal service.

“In this complicated country and in an evolving sport, with a lot of complete and complicated things, he is there following 34 years, with a formidable women’s team, had the former president of OM. And then he released a countless stars, players who have become great players.”
“If there were two more, the French championship would not have the face it has today!”
“He knows how to do the right thing in football, which is to say: ‘I’m the boss because I pay and I give power distance to those I have chosen but telling them rules simple: you have the right to be the boss as long as you win, continued Bernard Tapie. If there were two more, the French championship would not have the face it has today! Well done Jean-Michel, I love you.”
“Thank you Bernard, I love you too. You taught me everything and gave me the desire. And giving the desire is important”, replied a Jean-Michel Aulas, extremely moved.
The love story between Lyon and Jean-Michel Aulas began in 1987. At the time, he faced a huge challenge: to clean up the finances of an OL riddled with debt and sportingly adrift in the second division. Two years following the arrival of JMA, Lyon returned to the first division, before qualifying for the European Cup in 1991.
Under the direction of Jean-Michel Aulas, OL has become a stronghold of French and European football thanks to its men’s teams (seven French championship titles between 2002 and 2008, two French Cups in 2008 and 2012, half- Champions League finals in 2010 and 2020) and women (15 French championship titles, eight Champions League, nine French Cup).
The entrepreneur, who made his fortune with Cegid (European Company for Decentralized Computer Management), is also a reference in football business: he was until last December the only French club manager to own his stadium, Groupama Stadium, and a club listed on the stock exchange.
