President Yoon Seok-yeol ordered thorough follow-up measures related to the agreements between Korea and Japan in each field discussed at the Korea-Japan summit on the 8th.

Presidential Office Spokesperson Lee Do-woon disclosed President Yoon’s instructions through a written briefing that day. According to spokesman Lee, President Yoon ordered “to take thorough follow-up measures regarding security, industry, science and technology, culture, and future generation exchanges” at a senior secretary’s meeting held at the Presidential Office at Yongsan University in Seoul that day.

The previous day, President Yoon announced in a joint press conference following a summit meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida that he had decided to send a delegation of Korean experts to inspect the Fukushima spillage issue. He also agreed to promote people-to-people exchanges by expanding flights from local cities in Korea and Japan to pre-Corona 19 levels. In addition, they confirmed the importance of trilateral cooperation between Korea, the United States and Japan, and decided to expand joint research in advanced technologies such as space, quantum, digital bio, and AI.

At the Korea-Japan summit, there were also comments from the Japanese side related to historical issues. Prime Minister Kishida said, “(Regarding issues of past history), we inherit the positions of previous cabinets as a whole, including the 1998 Korea-Japan Joint Statement (Kim Dae-jung-Obuchi Declaration),” and said, “This position will not be shaken.” Next, Prime Minister Kishida drew attention by saying, “I am heartbroken that you have had a sad and difficult experience in a harsh environment.” Then, Prime Minister Kishida first suggested to President Yoon that he visit the memorial tower for Korean victims in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. Earlier, Prime Minister Kishida officially invited President Yoon to the G7 summit scheduled to be held in Hiroshima, Japan, at the end of this month.
