The driver of a vehicle, chased by Antwerp police on Saturday evening, got rid of large sums of cash by throwing banknotes out of the window, reports the Gazet van Antwerp, which the police confirmed. The vehicle had fled to escape a police check following committing a traffic offense in the Hoboken district.
The police were only able to recover ten thousand euros. Officers were unable to intercept the vehicle during the chase. But during the night, a man came to the police station claiming to be the driver in question. The investigation must still determine the reasons for his escape and the throwing of money through the windows. The police do not exclude that more scattered tickets were recovered by passers-by or residents.
Between the chase and the moment when this individual showed up at the station, the police believed they had once more spotted the car in question. A new chase took place on the A12 motorway to Schaerbeek in the Brussels region. This vehicle was intercepted with the help of other police forces, who eventually found that it was another car model. The reason for the leak of this second conductor is still unknown. The man was however under the influence of a forfeiture of license and, like his passenger, known to justice. The individual who presented himself as the driver chased in the first place will be prosecuted on suspicion of money laundering.
The two people in the second car chased by mistake were released following a hearing, but the driver will probably still have to appear before a police judge. The investigation continues for the two facts and the police try to determine if the two cases should be treated separately.
