At least 20 dead following tourist boat capsizes

At least 20 people died on Sunday when a boat carrying tourists capsized in the southern state of Kerala. Most of the victims are children.

Twenty deaths have so far been recorded, according to the daily “Times of India” and the PTI news agency. The Indian daily “Express” counts 18.

“Saddened by the loss of life following the boat accident in Malappuram, Kerala. (All my) condolences to the bereaved families,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, promising compensation to the next of kin of each victim.

The incident happened in Tanur, a coastal town in Malappuram district, Kerala. Rescue operations are underway. Most of the victims are children, during school holidays, said V. Abdurahiman, Kerala state sports minister who is coordinating the rescue efforts.

“No life jacket”

More than 30 people were on the boat when the incident happened. Four of them in critical condition were taken to hospital, V. Abdurahiman told PTI.

Survivors testified to the local press, observing that many passengers were not wearing life jackets. The reason for the vessel’s capsizing remains unknown at this time.
