Yesterday, the Iraqi Artists Syndicate and the Arab Theater Authority mourned the theater director and actor Mohsen Al-Azzawi, who died at the age of 84 following a struggle with illness.
The union said in a statement: “With great sadness and sorrow, the Iraqi Artists Syndicate mourns the passing of the great artist Mohsen Al-Azzawi, at the age of 84.”
Al-Azzawi was born in April 1939 in the city of Nasiriyah in Dhi Qar Governorate. He graduated from the Institute of Fine Arts, Department of Theater, then completed his studies at the Academy of Dramatic and Musical Arts in Prague.
He directed more than 60 plays, including: “Tantal”, “The Sanctuary of His Excellency”, “The World in a Night”, “An Innocent Call to Love”, “Your Repentance This Evening”, “The Earth’s Anthem”, “The Swing of Lost Time” and “The Fire”.
He also participated in acting in the series: “Baghdad’s Phobia”, “Strangers of the Night”, “The Illusionist”, “Alienation of a Homeland”, “A Man Above Suspicions”, “Safar and Stations”, “The Harvest of the Orchards”, “Women in a Story” and “The Darkness of the Night”. » and others.
He held many positions, including: Director of the National Band for Acting between 1975 and 1982, and Director of the National Band for Folklore between 1987 and 1991.
He authored a number of research books, and published his memoirs in a book entitled “Betting on Time… An Autobiography with Chapters and Scenes.”
His works won several theatrical awards, and he was honored by the Baghdad International Theater Festival in 2021.
