SAN SALVADOR DE JUJUY (special envoy).- In elections of national impactJujeños elect today the successor of Gerardo Morales, head of the UCR and one of the candidates for president of Together for Change. Electoral Justice sources maintain that the elections in this district are taking place normally, while the Left and Workers Front (FIT-Unidad) denounces irregularities: from the theft of ballots and the impediment to the entry of its prosecutors in some centers voting, even an alleged case of “parallel dark room” in Libertador General San Martín.
In the Electoral Court, however, they informed THE NATION that the complaints presented so far are “minor” and allude to alleged irregularities registered during the first hours of the day.
A slow scrutiny is expected for today: the first official data might only be known following 9:00 p.m. Around 5:00 p.m., 65% of the voters in Jujuy had already voted.
Meanwhile, Governor Morales awaits the first results of the witness tables at the Alto de la Viña hotel, where the ruling party set up its bunker. Later, the presences of Horacio Rodríguez Larreta and Martín Lousteau are expected here before the chance that radicalism will rise with a victory.
After 5:00 p.m., Morales sat in the hotel bar to watch the superclassic between River Plate and Boca Juniors with José Cano, Ricardo Buryaile and Ángel Rozas, leaders of radicalism and allies of Morales. The governor clarifies that he is impartial. “It says that I am from Independiente,” he says. The Chaco Rozas chicaned him. “It can’t be, Gerardo. River would already have to have two less players, ”he reproaches him. Morales is in a good mood before his co-religionists. They celebrate the level of participation and await the arrival of Mario Negri.
All of them expect a resounding victory for radicalism to gain muscle in the fight with Pro for the lists. “We have to win by twenty points,” enthused Morales’s collaborators.
The overwhelming favorite in the gubernatorial race is Charles Sadirthe dolphin of Morales and candidate of the pro-government Cambia Jujuy front, which brings together radicalism, non-Kirchnerist Peronists, socialists and the Pro, with little representation in this territory. Morales, candidate for the first constituent convention, seeks to exceed 40% to consolidate his presidential candidacy and reposition himself in the internal JxC dispute over the lists.
Both Sadir and Morales attended the morning vote and will meet. The man chosen by Morales to fight for his succession in Jujuy arrived at General Manuel Belgrano School Number 1 at 9 o’clock accompanied by two of his daughters. The current Minister of Treasury and Finance agreed with the start of election day, but called on citizens to participate in the election. The climate of discomfort with the political leadership due to the worsening of inflation worries those around Morales and Sadir.
For this reason, one of the keys to the elections will be the percentage of blank votes, which might favor the ruling party, and the degree of participation. In the opposition they are enthusiastic regarding the chance that the “undecided” -between 10 and 15%- will push the ballots of the alternatives to the UCR. “Today’s result is important for Jujuy and for Gerardo, because of his candidacy,” Sadir acknowledged, meeting with his closest collaborators at the Le Petit confectionery, in downtown San Salvador de Jujuy.
Morales voted at the José Hernández Educational Complex, along with his wife, Tulia Snopek, and Guadalupe, one of their daughters. The governor of Jujuy was in a good mood and did not hide his anxiety over the counting of the votes. Optimistic regarding the result of today’s election, he vindicated his management at the head of the Executive in Jujuy -he is serving his second term- and defended the reform of the provincial Constitution: “We are going to end the pardon and indefinite re-elections”, he expressed. His competitors accuse him of wanting to modify Jujuy’s magna carta to concentrate greater power in the Executive and advance on freedoms and control agencies.
In a press conference that he gave on the second floor of the educational establishment, Morales also interfered in the national internship of Together for Change. After what Mary Eugenia Vidal announced that he was dropping his candidacy for the presidency, he said that “it is possible” to unify the national offer of JxC -that is, to avoid the internal one in the PASO-, although he warned that the main weakness of the space is that it fails to coordinate its story to show itself as a Government alternative to Kirchnerism. “We have technical teams and a program. That is the strength. The weakness is that any candidate goes to the media and says anything. There is no message, ”he remarked.
Despite the internal tensions, Morales assured that he trusts that JxC will remain cohesive following the PASO. And he once more attacked the proposals of Javier Miley, whom he described as “alive, crazy, who rides” on the anger of the population over the crisis. “We are going to order. The country needs us to put down the fighting and focus. Milei’s thing is a leap into the void. That is crazy, ”he stressed.
Morales and Sadir’s rivals also turned out to vote in the morning. Businessman Ruben Rivarola, candidate for governor of the Justicialista Front, attended school N 176 in the town of Palpalá. The head of the PJ, one of the three Peronist options competing in today’s election, thanked the militants of his force for the “effort” they showed during the campaign. Rivarola is seconded in the formula by the national deputy Carolina Moisés (Front of All), leads the option that brings together the greatest number of expressions of Peronism. Immersed in their own internships, the government’s national referents avoided getting involved in the provincial campaign and in the arming of the PJ, which has representatives on three lists: the “Justicialista Front”, “Jujuy Has a Future” and “Unidad por Jujuy”.
The Campora he backed Rivarola in an underhanded way, who is betting, above all, on recovering various municipalities in the interior. In San Salvador de Jujuy, the most populous district in the province -concentrates more than 40% of the census- and where radicalism is strong, the toughest battles will be fought with the UCR. In Jujuy, the collector system has a fundamental weight in the competition and favors the dominant forces.
The unknown of the elections is whether the diversity of PJ candidates will favor the chances of the left, which aspires to channel the angry vote due to the economic crisis and bets on giving a bump in Jujuy.
On the left front they want to surprise and displace Peronism as the opposition space with the greatest popular support in Jujuy. Such is the expectation that the national deputy Myriam Bregman traveled yesterday to this province to support Alexander Vilca, the candidate for governor of the FIT-Unidad, who made a “historic” election in 2021 when he obtained 25% of the votes. Vilca is concerned regarding the cumbersome control network that is needed to cover the entire territory of Jujuy. In fact, he denounced that the Morales “regime” tries to “violate the people’s vote.” According to Vilca, the left suffered “fraudulent maneuvers” at the start of the elections, such as the theft of ballots. “They don’t let our prosecutors in,” Vilca said. For the FIT candidate, the PJ and the UCR act in tandem to harm his electoral chances.
He said the same to THE NATION Bregman. “Today we saw a total extreme: the parallel darkroom. In Libertador General San Martín they made a dark room for those who voted for the PJ and the UCR and another, with the rest of the ballots. The desperate compañeros began to call us, ”he denounced. According to what he recounted, the leftist prosecutors were told that they were doing it “to tidy up a bit.”
With 588 thousand people qualified to vote, today the governor and vice president, 24 provincial legislators, mayors and councilors are elected in Jujuy. The constituent conventions that will participate in the reform process of the provincial magna carta that Morales promoted during his second term are also defined.
The exponents of the Unity for Jujuy front, which leads in the binomial to Juan Cardozo Traillou and Diego Granda, as a candidate for governor and vice, also came to vote in the morning. This space leads as the first candidate for a constituent convention to the senator Guillermo Snopek, who was challenged in the category of governor for being Morales’s brother-in-law. That force orbits close to the army that they lead Juan Schiaretti y Juan Manuel Urtubey.
Yes ok Miracle Room did not support any candidate -his judicial situation deepened the division in the local PJ-, his political arm, the Popular Sovereignty Party, is part of the Snopek front. Rodolfo Tecchi, Fellner’s former Minister of Education, also appears on the PJ menu.
Also competing for the succession of Morales in today’s election is Iñaki Aldasoro (Worker Policy) and Cecilia García (VIA + Libertarian Front). Javier Milei (La Libertad Avanza) clarified during the last hours that he does not support any candidate in Jujuy.
