Annemiek van Vleuten expanded her exceptional record a little more by winning her third Tour of Spain on Sunday. The champion is only nine seconds ahead of her Dutch compatriot Demi Vollering.

However, it was not easy. While she had a 1 min 11 sec lead in the general classification on Sunday morning over Demi Vollering, she almost lost everything during the final ascent of 12.5 km at 6.9% average to the prestigious natural theater of the Covadonga lakes.
But she hung on to limit the damage following being dropped five kilometers from the goal by Vollering (SD Worx), who took off to win her second stage in this Vuelta, and the Italian Gaia Realini (Trek- Segafredo), second in the stage and third overall.
At the top, in thick fog, Annemiek van Vleuten ultimately kept a small nine-second lead over Demi Vollering, the great lady of this start to the season, following having notably achieved the hat-trick in the Ardennes. “I’m very happy and very, very tired,” she responded.
Controversy during the penultimate stage
This is the first victory in 2023 for Annemiek van Vleuten, who has evolved a notch below her usual standards since the start of the season, and who wins the Vuelta without having won a single stage.
