The energy crisis, among others, is worsening these days in Cuba. Along with the rise in currency prices in the island’s informal market, the cost of gasoline also rises. In the midst of the current scenario of fuel availability deficit, a liter is quoted today at more than $500.00 CUP “on the street”.The opinions of thousands of drivers, who depend on this fuel to continue working and support their families, have not stopped being published. Social networks are flooded with comments related to gasoline prices throughout the country, which allows establishing an average value. Thus, it can be concluded that a liter of gasoline can be obtained today at $700.00 CUP, even in some places.

The reality is that in the midst of a crisis, whoever has gasoline to sell today, sets the price they understand. Any amount will be sold in a very short time because there is no availability in service centers through the traditional way.

Buying and selling on social networks

Once once more, social networks, especially Facebook, have been the protagonists of business in Cuba. Hundreds of advertisements can be seen daily regarding how to “get” gas and at what price.

A user published the following post a few hours ago in a group in Arroyo Naranjo, Havana. “Knowing how the fuel situation is, people start to squeeze and resell. I found out that on Avenida 2da, Güinera, Arroyo Naranjo there was a man who was selling regular gasoline at 700 pesos per liter”.

Another posted: “I buy 20 liters of gasoline, whatever. I don’t pay more than 300 pesos per liter. If it’s not at that price, don’t bother,” said the user identified as Ariel Meneses. “I buy gasoline to work and be able to support my family,” said a person in need of fuel for his work, in the group Where is there Gasoline!? Havana.
