An Iraqi court issued a death sentence once morest a former policeman for convicting him of the assassination of researcher Hisham al-Hashemi in July 2020 near his home in Baghdad, according to an official statement, on Sunday, in a case that sparked condemnation in Iraq and abroad.
A statement issued by the Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council stated that “the Rusafa Criminal Court issued its death sentence once morest Ahmed Hamdawi Awaid for the murder of security expert Hisham al-Hashemi.”
The convict can appeal this ruling, as confirmed to AFP by a judicial source who preferred not to reveal his identity.
