Let’s be honest, many of us make this fatal mistake. To save time, it’s still so much easier to wash all the dirty laundry at once, isn’t it? Certainly. But it is wrong. You should definitely get into the habit of separating your underwear from the rest of the laundry before you do your laundry. And this, regardless of their material: whether they are cotton, per se or bamboo…this step is just fundamental. For what ?

Here are the reasons:

  • This protects delicate fabrics from many damages.
  • This will prevent the transfer of bacteria from your underwear to your other clothes.
  • This also allows you to wash your underwear at the right temperature (often different from the rest of the laundry!).
  • And above all, thanks to this sorting, which will only take you a few minutes, you can hope to extend the life of your delicate parts. It’s still worth it, right? Especially since the lingerie is not given!

Beware of the lack of hygiene!

During an interview in the German newspaper “Die Welt”, the microbiologist Dr Dirk Bockmühl shared edifying results following a survey carried out among a certain number of people: he reveals that no less than 25% of the men questioned and 10% of women admitted that they don’t change their underwear more than once every two days. Worse still, they often go to bed with dirty panties and underpants. An unhealthy practice that must absolutely be abolished! Many people neglect this point, but these private rooms, when their hygiene is questionable, can do serious damage to health.

After all, panties and briefs are in direct contact with your intimate organs: who would like to have a colony of germs and bacteria in those sensitive areas? This horrifying idea alone should make you change your underwear daily, even twice a day. Especially since no one is immune to the dreaded “Candida” fungus which causes all kinds of fungal infections, such as candidiasis. So, a piece of advice, to avoid exposing yourself to germs and viruses, take the reflex today to change your underwear!

Noticed : in addition to respecting basic hygiene rules, when shopping, give preference to cotton items. They are healthier and more comfortable for your genitals. Thus, they are not suffocated and will be able to “breathe” better. As a bonus, you will be able to wash them more easily at a temperature high enough to eradicate the fungi and bacteria that encrust themselves on the fabric.

Well, you have surely learned the lesson and you intend to change your habits. Now let’s move on to another important step: as there is no shortage of choice when it comes to underwear and fabrics, it is necessary not to make mistakes when doing laundry. To make it easier for you, here is a general overview of the steps you need to follow to wash and dry them properly, whatever the fabric of your delicate pieces.

  • Rule of thumb: always read the care label carefully. These indications will be invaluable to you so that you do not make mistakes when washing. Ouch, your lingerie set doesn’t have a tag or maybe you had it cut off when you bought it? Well, don’t panic, sort your underwear according to categories. If you find them very delicate, it is better to wash them by hand to avoid damaging them.
  • Ideally, always spot clean before considering running a machine. Apply a commercial stain remover or liquid laundry detergent (or even a natural one!) and rub it into the stained area. Above all, avoid twisting the underwear, it might stretch or become deformed. Simply squeeze out any excess water.
  • Before plunging them into the drum, always turn your underwear inside out, as you would with pants. As a general rule, fragile lingerie and some bras should be zipped in a mesh bag to protect them during the wash cycle.
  • We repeat it once once more: never mix your underwear with too dirty clothes or rough fabrics like jeans or heavy clothes, loaded with studs and zippers. It’s the best way to rip your panties!
  • Always choose a mild detergent, such as Neutral 0%, this protects both fabrics and sensitive skin.
  • After the wash cycle, do not leave your underwear in the drum for a long time. Remove them immediately to prevent any bacteria growth or musty smell.

So, to be sure to clean your underwear thoroughly, it is better to wash them with light loads. But still ? Well, go for a gentle cycle with lukewarm water and all-purpose detergent, unless of course the label says “gentle”. Then dry them on low heat (especially items that contain spandex) or air dry to prevent shrinkage.

  • At what temperature should you wash panties, underpants and bras?

Temperature does indeed play an essential role. As most clothes are washed at 40°C, unfortunately this will not be enough to exterminate all the bacteria present in your underwear. Even worse, if you mix them with the rest of the laundry, germs will quickly be transferred from one room to another. So what would be the most appropriate temperature? These items, especially panties, should be washed at a minimum of 60°C, and even preferably at 90°C (check the label to be sure!). Such a temperature is able to eliminate almost all pathogenic bacteria from the fabric. On the other hand, it would be wiser to swap your usual washing powder for a liquid with silver ions, for its powerful antibacterial effect. Do you often suffer from infections in your intimate area? In this case, always prefer 100% cotton pieces to wash them at high temperatures. It may seem trivial to you, but you will see, it will change your life!
