The royal crown is a heraldic emblem, therefore concerning the coat of arms. His new design had been approved by the king in April 2023, on the advice of Justin Trudeau and “includes elements emphasizing the Canadian identity of the monarchy”, can we read on the site of the governor general of the Canada.

Commonalities with the old crowns

The structure, composed of a golden circle and two intersecting arches surrounded by pearls, is the same as the Tudor crown, therefore the English royal crown of the time of Henry VIII.

The new design also contains a red toque lined with ermine fur.

Canadian specificities

The new Royal Canadian Crown features the maple leaf, which has represented the country and its people since the 19th century.

At the top, there is now a snowflake which refers to Canada as a Nordic country, which is inspired by the Canadian diadem and which establishes a direct link with the insignia of the Order of Canada.

Around the edges, the crown is decorated with triangular points and hollows which also recall the diadem, and which are a reference to the mountains and river valleys of the country.

The wavy blue band evokes the lakes and rivers, as well as the three oceans that border the borders. It therefore highlights the importance of the environment to Canadians and Indigenous teachings, which see water as the lifeblood that nourishes the earth.

This new crest was created by Cathy Bursey-Sabourin, Fraser Herald and Senior Artist at the Canadian Heraldic Authority.

The government also unveiled the new royal flag, a Canadian stamp and collectibles designed for the event.
