Ploner also ran before the official election date
Incidentally, this mayoral election within the municipal council expressly enables the Salzburg municipal election regulations (§ 3, Section 3): If the mayor resigns from office in the fifth year of a period, “he is to be elected by the municipal council from among them”.
The early determination of a successor in this way occurs once more and once more in pre-election years – preferably in municipalities in which the mayor’s party has an absolute majority (like the ÖVP in Krispl-Gaißau): Because in this way even a “mayor newcomer” as incumbent mayor to run for election. Ploner himself also took office in 2013, one year before the official election date, as did Wolfgang Auer in Adnet (2008), Fritz Holztrattner in Bad Vigaun (2013) and Peter Harlander in Golling (2018).
