Cleaning up startup applications on Windows is very simple, thanks to a tool offered by Microsoft.
All long-time users of Windows know how frustrating it can be to wait for apps and services to finish loading so you can do what you need to do. Recent Windows and SSD improvements make things faster, obviously, but the problem goes deeper. Some apps, native or not, are too “sticky”, stubbornly launching when your machine starts. And some don’t have an option to prevent this behavior.
Cleaning up startup applications on Windows is very easy
Strangely, there is a solution to this problem, and this one comes from Microsoft. The giant manages and distributes software called Autoruns, thought and designed to turn off apps and services that use the auto-run process. But it is possible to use Autoruns to permanently stop getting rid of those unwanted apps.
First, download the Autoruns ZIP file and install it wherever you want. Launch the app and prepare to ignore most of the tabs and information presented.
Go directly to the Logon tab, which only shows apps that launch when the user logs in. You can scroll to find the app you want to get rid of and uncheck the box. It is a manual work, certainly, but the game is worth the candle. And the beauty of the thing is that your machine will remain in this configuration, unless you cancel the manipulation yourself by checking the box once more.

Admittedly, the list is long. If you are only looking for recently installed third-party apps, click the “Hide Windows entries” button. The list is also sprinkled with color, depending on Microsoft’s authorization level: in yellow, the application is not found on the system and in red, it is not approved by Microsoft (which does not mean that she is evil).
And now, voila ! If you’re curious, you can take a tour of the Autoruns app to see what it has to offer and find out, for example, everything that happens on startup. The Drives section shows you all the drivers. The Services section allows you to discover possible harmful services. Each service also has its short description line, which you should read carefully before deactivating. And in general, refrain from disabling Windows services.
