The Opera House in the French city of Lille celebrates the centenary of its founding in 1923 with a modern version of Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” opera, and with a series of dance concerts, according to what it announced yesterday during a press conference regarding its program for the 2023-2024 season.
The director of the house, Caroline Sonrier, explained that the opera “Don Giovanni”, which is considered one of Mozart’s “masterpieces”, will be presented at the opening of the season in early October, under the supervision of the orchestra leader and harpsichord pianist Emmanuelle Ayem.
The opera was presented when the house reopened in 2003, following it was closed for five years for rehabilitation.
She pointed out that this version of “Don Giovanni” deals with “a very present topic in Mozart’s work or in the current reality, which is seduction as a means to obtain power, and how it can be offensive or even aggressive.”
The Belgian director, Guy Cassier, conducts a “political reading immersed in contemporary social issues” through the work, and accompanies the movement on stage with video scenes.
And the “Lille Opera” presents, almost 100 years following its opening, a concert on October 11 that restores the program for the opening night of the house on October 7, 1923.
In the same month, a German troupe presents a German and French opera, recalling the German occupation of the house between 1916 and 1918, before it was officially opened.
In December, a parquet floor will be installed to turn the opera into a ballroom for a number of dance parties.
In the program, Wagner’s “Tristan and Isolde” was shown in March, directed by the new director of the Avignon Festival, Tiago Rodriguez, with the season ending in June 2024 with “The Bat” by Austrian composer Johann Strauss.
