A fight degenerated Friday at Zaventem station. Young people found themselves on the tracks as a train passed. One of them did not survive. Another is in mortal danger.
The young man who died has not yet been identified, the Hal-Vilvoorde prosecutor’s office announced in the evening. “There are strong presumptions that he is a 23-year-old man from Etterbeek but this can only be confirmed following an autopsy on Monday,” according to the prosecution. During the fight, a young 16-year-old from Brussels was also seriously injured.
“It appears from the first findings that around 4:15 p.m. around ten people started fighting on the platform of the Zaventem station,” said the spokesperson for the prosecution, Gills Blondeau. “During this altercation, three people found themselves on the tracks. Shortly following, a high-speed train passed. One of the three people, who has not yet been identified, was able to leave the track in time, but not the other two”. According to Het Laatste Nieuws, a samurai sword was confiscated.
One of the two victims of the collision died on the spot, but she might not yet be identified. “There are strong indications that he is a 23-year-old man from Etterbeek, but this can only be confirmed following an autopsy on Monday,” the spokesperson continued. “The other person is a 16-year-old from Brussels, who was seriously injured and was taken to hospital.”
The prosecution appointed the laboratory and a medical examiner, as well as requested an investigating judge. During the evening, the prosecution, the investigating judge and the experts left the scene.
“The federal police of Hal-Vilvoorde will be in charge of the continuation of the investigation”, according to this spokesman, who specifies that no arrest has yet taken place.
Rail traffic was able to resume between Brussels North and Louvain stations in the evening.
