Lewis Hamilton repeatedly points out human rights violations in the host countries on his round-the-world trips in Formula 1 – and he has plenty of reason to do so in the USA as well.

Before the Miami Grand Prix on Sunday, the record world champion criticized Florida’s handling of the LGBTQ+ community and a discriminatory law by Governor Ron DeSantis.

“It’s not good at all,” said Hamilton, “I’m standing here with the community and I hope they keep fighting it.” In Miami, the Englishman will wear the rainbow flag on his helmet.

He even sees parallels to the situation that he recently criticized on the sidelines of the race in Saudi Arabia: “It’s the wrong direction and the wrong message.”

Specifically, it is regarding Florida’s handling of information on sexual orientation and transgender issues: In kindergartens and elementary schools, the treatment of such topics is already prohibited, this should also apply in the higher school levels in the future. “The problem isn’t with the people of Florida, the problem is with the people in government,” Hamilton said.
