Evenepoel’s probably biggest rival for the overall victory, the Slovenian Primoz Roglic, lost 43 seconds in the first exchange of blows in sixth place.

Kämna even lost 1:23 minutes, so the German time trial champion in 22nd place in the daily result clearly fell short of expectations. His Bora teammate Aleksandr Vlavov (Russia) did better in tenth, 55 seconds back.
Third place went to the Portuguese Joao Almeida (+0:29), behind him the 2020 Giro winner, Tao Geoghegan Hart from England (+0:40) also claimed the podium. The Swiss Stefan Küng took fifth place (+0:43).

Pure climbers like Jack Haig (+1:36), Hugh Carthy (+1:56), Santiago Buitrago (+2:02) or Domenico Pozzovivo (+2:11) lost even more time than Kämna at the start of the three-week tour , but who did significantly worse in his special discipline than at the Giro start last year in Budapest, where he finished eighth.

Evenepoel with a perfect Giro start

Only ten riders were less than a minute behind Evenepoel, who in the jersey of the Belgian champion set the best times right from the start and shocked all his rivals. After his solo victory in the classic Liège-Bastogne-Liège at the end of April, he used his next appearance to demonstrate his power once more. The almost completely flat course on the coast of Abruzzo perfectly suited the qualities of the Vuelta winner – for him it was a dream start to his first Giro.

“I’m extremely happy with this start,” said Evenepoel in the interview with the winner, “I immediately had a good rhythm, was able to maintain my cadence and focused less on the distance to Roglic and more on winning the stage.”

The sprinters around Pascal Ackermann and Mark Cavendish will get their first chance on the second stage on Sunday.
