“From Player to Coach: The Surprising Past of Tom Thibodeau”

2023-05-06 13:00:00

If he is known to all to be a long-lived coach in the league for many years, Tom Thibodeau was a player in a past life. Not at a high level, admittedly, but enough to smack a points average that left Immanuel Quickley speechless. And to a totally unlikely post please…

Stocky, the weight of the years on his shoulders, Tom Thibodeau drags his carcass on the edge of the sidelines for 40 years now. Doing a great job at the Knicks, “Thibs” also went through many franchises, including the Bulls as a head coach, but also the Spurs, Sixers, Knicks, Wolves and Rockets as an assistant.

Although he has never played a single minute in the NBA, the double coach of the year has yet started well in the shoes of a player, on the side of his modest university of Salem State in division 3 of the NCAA. And to everyone’s surprise, while he was playing strong winger (!) despite his small 88 meter, Thibodeau was an outstanding scorer in his youth.

Tom Thibodeau, the threat of snowshoes in college

Just recently, Knicks guard Immanuel Quickley was asked by SLAM regarding his coach’s scoring average during his college days. Surely anxious to spare the susceptibility of “Thibs”, IQ bet on 12 points, which would have been honorable. But nay! It’s no less than 26 pawns per game that the Knicks coach planted. Something to leave Quickley (literally) speechless:

Captain of Salem State from the 1980-1981 season, Thibodeau led his team to several regional trophies, as well as consecutive participation in the national division 3 tournament. Once his diploma was validated, he then became assistant coach in this same college until 1984, before continuing to work at Harvard from 1985 to 1989.

That year, “Thibs” made the leap to the NBA, from where he has never left for 34 years now. For the record, there are unfortunately no video extracts of this famous dominant winger by the name of Thomas Thibodeau on the side of Salem State… to our great regret!

Secretive Tom Thibodeau is full of secrets, and this one was damn well kept. We imagine that even in his sixties, the Knicks coach has some nice leftovers with the ball in hand. Fortunately, with Julius Randle, the succession is assured in this famous position of strong winger that he mastered so much…
