President Yoon Seok-yeol will hold a Korea-Japan summit with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, who will visit Korea tomorrow (7th) at the Presidential Office in Yongsan.
Prime Minister Kishida’s visit to Korea is a two-day, one-night schedule in the form of a working visit.
The two leaders met once more following 52 days as a response to President Yoon’s visit to Tokyo, Japan, in the form of a working-level visit on March 16-17.
With Prime Minister Kishida’s visit to Korea this time, ‘shuttle diplomacy’, in which the heads of Korea and Japan go back and forth to discuss pending issues, will be restored following 12 years.
President Yoon and Prime Minister Kishida will hold a joint press conference following an official welcome ceremony at the Presidential Office in Yongsan on the followingnoon of the 7th, followed by talks with only a small number of aides present and expanded talks.
Key issues of interest between the two countries, such as security, high-tech industries, science and technology, and cultural cooperation, are expected to be addressed at the summit.
The leaders of Korea and Japan are expected to announce concrete measures to build new cooperative relations in areas such as security, economy, culture, and people-to-people exchanges.
Apart from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), there is interest in whether the two leaders will agree that Korea and Japan will conduct a ‘joint safety verification of the plan to discharge contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan’.
Prime Minister Kishida will arrive in Korea tomorrow (7th) and begin his first visit to the National Cemetery in Dongjak-dong, Seoul.
The two leaders will have a dinner and fellowship event tomorrow (7th) at the presidential residence in Hannam-dong.
