Zimbabwe’s extreme poverty rate fell slightly to 42% in 2022 from 43% in 2021, the Zimbabwe National Institute of Statistics (ZIMSTAT) said on Friday.

This is according to the results of the latest high-frequency telephone survey, known as the Rapid-Poverty Income Consumption and Expenditure Surveys (PICES), conducted by ZIMSTAT between December 2022 and January 2023.

According to the survey, the proportion of the Zimbabwean population facing severe food insecurity fell from 27% in July 2020 to 9% during the period between December 2022 and January 2023.

“In general, food insecurity decreases as the country receives abundant and timely rains,” ZIMSTAT said.

Zimbabwe expects to harvest 2.3 million tonnes of maize in 2023, a 58% increase from the previous season, thanks to favorable rains.

Zimbabwe’s extreme poverty levels have gradually declined following peaking at 49% at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

The World Bank has however warned that despite an upturn in economic activity in the post-COVID-19 era, poverty in Zimbabwe is likely to remain high as the scars of two years of recession (2019-2020) , food insecurity and the pandemic remain.
