One tells in detail how he joined, by train then by ferry, Marrakech (Morocco), from the city of Nantes, transforming the least of his galleys into an adventure. Others recount their escape to Sicily, embellishing it with photos taken in the berths of a train that connects Rome to Catania.

Since March, on social networks, these traveler testimonials have been highlighted by new associative platforms. With a vocation, to inspire and restore the “reflex” of traveling by rail to those who have forgotten it in favor of the plane alone. “We did not expect the project to generate such interest”notes Chiara Pellas, 26, one of the co-founders of the aptly named Mollow.

Launched in March, this platform has attracted more than 60,000 visitors in one month and seen its community grow. “There are more volunteers than needs”, notes, for her part, Clémence Martin, one of them, who notes “a real ecological resonance” of the project, the purpose of which is to avoid 1 million tonnes of CO emissions2 within five years.

Created in the process, on the same model, Hourrail! also arouses great curiosity. With over 220,000 page views in a month and a half. “On average, out of a hundred people who visit our site, eight have clicked on a link to buy a ticket”underlines Benjamin Martinie, 32, one of the creators.

“A request from millennials”

“This type of initiative essentially responds to a request from generations born following the year 2000insists Jean-Pierre Mas, president of Travel Companies. Behaviors are starting to change among these millennials. Some affirm their desire for sobriety, even abstinence when it comes to air travel”, he adds.

However, these furrows still seem very thin in view of the current resumption of air travel, fueled by the desire to ward off the effects of confinements during Covid-19. According to the Observatory of Travel Companies, reservations for the period from 1is they have 1 moreis June increased by 42% on medium-haul and 48% on long-haul compared to the same period of 2022.

Admittedly, many booking platforms have been around for years. Among the best known are SNCF Connect, Trainline, Kombo, Omio. Or that of the InterRail card, which allows travel on the European rail network (from four days to three months).

The newcomers want to go further, by suggesting itineraries tested by travelers or taken, as Mollow does, from the recent guide of the NGO Greenpeace: 41 eco-friendly travel ideas across Europe. Pour “paradigm shift”, the traveler chooses his journey according to the time he has and not according to the chosen destination, with estimated prices, booking links for each stage, comments on comfort or the corresponding carbon footprint.
