While on the show, theAntechamberMontreal Canadiens defenseman Johnathan Kovacevic, has spoken regarding his desire to stay in the roster once once more next year, despite the talented succession that is coming to Montreal, especially in defense.

It is by mixing English and a surprising French that the number 26 of the CH answered questions from Luc Bellemare by videoconference. Under contract for two more seasons, Kovacevic seems to believe in his chances of keeping his position on the Montreal blue line.

Recovered on waivers on October 8, the 25-year-old defender has played 77 games this season, only Nick Suzuki has done better for the Canadiens. Averaging over 17 minutes per game, Kovacevic finished the season with a plus-3 differential.

“I don’t think that’s the best stat, because there are so many factors, but my defensive game, I’m proud of it. I want to neutralize the other team when I’m on the ice,” he said.

To once once more be an integral part of the team in 2023-2024, Kovacevic is counting on a good summer in order to stay in shape and arrive ready for training camp.

“Training camp is very important, from the start of the season I have to be in good shape, I have to have had a good summer and show it to the coaches. »

Moreover, he loves working with Martin St-Louis and Stéphane Robidas, he feels great respect for them.

“They care regarding me personally [St-Louis et Robidas], I want to give my 100% for them, I want to go to war with them, I want to prove to them that they are right to trust me, they have so much passion and love for the sport and for us. I want to keep playing for them,” he said.

However, he and his coaches would love to have to deal with fewer injuries next year. Eleven defensemen have played with the Habs this season and Kovacevic was the only injury-free player in that defensive squad.

“I was lucky not to have been injured, it’s flat to have had so many injuries. I hope we have accumulated them all this year so that in the future we will have a strong and healthy team, but we cannot control that, ”he admitted.

Now on vacation, the Ontarian assures that he will follow the draft lottery on Monday as well as the rest of the playoffs. He also wants to improve his French, which is already good for a player who has only been in Montreal for a few months.
