Neuchâtel Xamax suffered an 18th defeat in the Challenge League championship, Friday evening at Pontaise, in its clash with Stade Lausanne-Ouchy (2-0). Uli Forte players haven’t won since February 26.

While his emblematic player, Raphaël Nuzzolo, was playing his 600th league match a few days following announcing the end of his career at the end of the season, the Neuchâtelois failed to overthrow the Vaudois.

But the Stadistes had to wait before finding the net. It was not until the 73rd minute that Liridon Mulaj, on a pass from Linus Obexer, opened the scoring to the delight of the 594 spectators. And, three minutes from time, Teddy Okou, assisted by Mergim Qarri, sealed the score by scoring 2-0 (87th).

This victory allows the Lausanne residents to still hope for a place in the top three. For Xamax, on the other hand, it smacks more and more of the relegation play-offs.

Third and fourth in the Challenge League at kick-off, Wil and Aarau failed to decide on Friday evening in Aargau (0-0). This result nevertheless allows the Saint-Gallois to take second place in the standings, one point ahead of LS and six lengths behind Yverdonnois. For Aarau, it’s the opposite, the points lost put them in 4th place, one point behind Stade Lausanne-Ouchy.

In the last match of this evening, Schaffhausen offered a tiny hope to Neuchâtel Xamax by beating Bellinzona 2-1. The defeat of the Ticino leaves them with an 11-point lead over Xamax four days before the end of the championship, i.e. 12 points at stake. Admittedly, hope is slim, but it brings to life and on the side of La Maladière all the good news are to be taken. The meeting between Ticino and Neuchâtelois on May 19 might be worth the trip.
