“Uncovering the European Cohesion through Music: From Eurovision Fanfare to King Charles’ Coronation”

2023-05-05 21:43:00

Who is behind the Eurovision fanfare and what the Champions League anthem has to do with King Charles’ coronation.

It remains to be seen which songs will make it to the final of the Song Contest this year – but one melody will definitely be heard: that of the Eurovision fanfare, which was created by the almost forgotten Baroque composer Marc-Antoine Charpentier.

In this podcast episode, Katrin Nussmayr and Wilhelm Sinkovicz address the many melodies that serve as a symbol of European cohesion. And not just on the occasion of the song contest on May 13: If you listen carefully to the coronation of King Charles on May 6, you might experience sounds that sound familiar from completely different major events. . .

Excerpts from the following recordings can be heard:

Teya & Salena: Who the Hell Is Edgar? (WM Germany)

MA Charpentier: Te Deum – The Musicians of the Louvre, Marc Minkowski (DG-Archiv)

G. Charpentier: »Louise«, Introduction, New Philharmonia – Georges Pretre (Sony)

European Union Youth Orchestra: Europahymne. Ludwig van Beethoven, Arrangement: H. v. Karajan

Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, soloist: Jan-Hendrik Rootering, conductor: Leonard Bernstein (from the album »Ode to Freedom«, DG)
