“How Geolocation Helped Police Catch Illegal Squatters and Thieves”

Thursday morning, around ten o’clock, someone rang the doorbell of Pierre Pagès, a resident of the Chaussée de Marche, in Wierde.

“He is a young student from Ciney”, locates the Wierdois. “He explains to me that he had parked his car the day before in Namur. And a bag was stolen from him in which was his computer with his course notes but also his mobile phone.”

The young man had already made the detour to the Namur police services. Thanks to a chip integrated into one of his electronic devices, we managed to locate the location of the stolen objects. But the police do not intervene directly.

The young man then decided to go there, at 632 Chaussée de Marche, in Wierde. The building at the corner of rue des Pacages is unoccupied.

He then inquires in the neighborhood. “I explained to him that the building has been unoccupied for two or three years. And it is regularly squatted”, explains Pierre Pagès.

Four illegally staying minors

In the meantime, the police arrived at the scene. Reinforcements from the Special Intervention Group (GIS) are also arriving.

The police invade the building and discover that four young people are occupying the premises.

“These are four minors of Algerian nationality”, is it specified on the side of the police of Namur. “They are illegally staying.” And one of them is already placed under the guardianship of the youth judge of Antwerp.

On site, the police will find the student’s computer and mobile phone, as well as the loot from other recent thefts.

The continuation of their trajectory will depend on the office of foreigners but also on the magistrates of the youth who will be seized of this file.

Geolocation will therefore have helped the police. “It’s not really a common case,” specifies Olivier Libois, the head of the Namur police force. “But if the injured person has the possibility of geolocating the property that has been stolen, this can obviously be used for the investigation.” With, in this case, results that are as quick as they are convincing.
