2023-05-05 07:47:52

According to the last perinatal survey conducted by Inserm in 2021, the rate of exclusive breastfeeding in the maternity ward is just over 56 %. It drops quickly. It is only 34% at two months. This breastfeeding rate is lower than in other European countries. Could D-mer syndrome be one of the reasons?

Dark thoughts when breastfeeding

Some mothers who have chosen to breastfeed their babies feel certain symptoms at the time of dysphoric milk ejection reflex. They can feel sad all of a sudden, be anxious, desperate, feel a certain panic, a feeling of emptiness in the stomach…

Ces unpleasant sensations are of short duration: 30 seconds to a few minutes. But they can come back if, during the feeding, there are several dysphoric milk ejection reflexes. D-mer syndrome can last for a few days, weeks, or as long as the mother is breastfeeding. It can also occur if the latter uses a draws milk.

Why these symptoms?

Above all, breastfeeding mothers can be reassured that this is not postpartum depression. These symptoms would be purely physiological, and related to hormones.

L’International Breastfeeding journal provides the following explanations: the D-mer syndrome is due to a drop in hormones playing a role in breastfeeding. There would be a fall of dopamine to allow the prolactin to take over. This hormone stimulates milk synthesis. A malfunction of theocytocyne (love hormone) would also be involved.

What to do regarding D-mer syndrome?

The cattilier is a plant that stimulates dopamine-sensitive receptors. But it should not be taken without prior medical advice.

Meditating while breastfeeding can be a way to refocus on the present and not focus on its unpleasant symptoms.

Treating yourself to relaxing massages can also help you let go.
