The Minister for Enterprises and Products Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso, ordered for the first time to convene a special commission due to the sharp rise in pasta prices. In March, they rose by 17.5% yoy. The meeting of the commission is scheduled for May 11.

According to the National Union of Italian Consumers, pasta prices have been rising in the country since June 2021, during this period they have already increased by 37%. Experts attribute this to the fall in prices for wheat used to make pasta. Since April 2022, Italian durum wheat has fallen in price by 28.3%, and grain imported from non-European Union (EU) countries by 34.4%, according to the Institute for Services for the Agri-Food Market (Ismea).

A March study by the consumer protection organization Assoutenti showed that in many regions and provinces of Italy, the price of 1 kg of pasta exceeded the psychological threshold of €2. The record was recorded in Ancona – € 2.44. Also, high prices were revealed in Bologna, Genoa, Cagliari.

“Pasta is one of the most beloved products of Italians. Its consumption is regarding 23 kg per person per year, and it is obvious that such high prices significantly affect the wallets of consumers,” says Assoutenti President Furio Truzzi (quoted by RIA Novosti).

The US Department of Agriculture in January raised the forecast for wheat exports for the EU by 0.5 million tons, to 36.5 million tons. The volume of world wheat trade in 2022/23 agricultural year will be 211.6 million tons, according to the USDA. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations expects grain trade in 2022/23 agricultural year to be 473 million tons (1.8% below the level of 2021/22).
