Honoring the best winter athletes in the army
Vienna (OTS) – On May 3rd, Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner congratulated the winter athletes of the Austrian Armed Forces on their outstanding achievements in the past season. The Army athletes have won a total of 47 medals at European and World Championships this season. By winning the overall World Cup, platoon leader Eva Pinkelnig in ski jumping and private Johannes Lamparter in Nordic combined set the glamorous highlights.
“You are role models because you inspire and motivate people with your talent, your discipline, your fairness and your team spirit. They show us what can be achieved with hard work, passion and perseverance. They encourage us to pursue our own goals and make our dreams come true,” emphasized Secretary of Defense Tanner at the reception.
Most medals were won at the Luge World Championships in Oberhof, Germany. Jonas Müller became world champion in the individual competition. At the Para-Alpine World Championships, which took place in Espot in Spain, Johannes Aigner, together with his guide Matteo Fleischmann, was able to win the world championship title twice. At the World Military Championships held in Sweden, athletes also won numerous medals in biathlon, patrol and ski mountaineering.
As part of the ceremony, ski mountaineering was presented as a new priority sport in the army. Originally, the competitions were organized by the military as military patrols. Civil races have also been held since the 1920s. The competitive variant of touring skiing is held in the disciplines of individual, team, relay and vertical races and will be part of the Olympic program for the first time in 2026.
The Army Sports Center has been promoting Austrian competitive sport with its ten Army competitive sports centers since 1962. Every year, up to 495 people, 20 of them in disabled sports, are part of the Army Sports support program. Traditionally, army sport has numerous participants in major sporting events such as the Olympic Games, European and World Championships. They were once more able to achieve numerous successes and medals for Austria.
