What is presbycusis?
The presbyacousie is a natural phenomenon manifested by the constant and progressive decrease or decrease in hearing. In other words, it is hearing loss associated with aging.

This common condition affects both ears symmetrically. It is usually genetic in origin, due to changes occurring in the inner ear.

Certain environmental factors cause or accelerate it, such as, for example, regular and excessive exposure to strong noise pollution. The principle of presbycusis is that it disturbs the speed of interpretation of sentences and the understanding of voices in noises.

Its influence on the perception of the location and intensity of sounds is therefore significant. It is mainly seniors who are affected, because, even if it begins around the age of 50, this degeneration is rarely noticeable before the age of 60. Furthermore, gender or origin have no impact on the degree of presbycusis.

How to diagnose presbycusis?
To detect it, you simply have to perform a hearing test. This exam is free and lasts between 40 and 60 minutes. It must be carried out with a hearing aid professional or an otolaryngologist (ENT).

– The hearing care professional will ask you regarding your lifestyle and any pain you may have felt;

– he will check the condition of the ear canals and eardrums;

– two audiometric tests will be carried out in a soundproof space: vocal audiometry (verification of the ability to understand) and tonal audiometry (verification of the ability to listen);

– If the hearing loss is confirmed, you will be referred to an ENT specialist. The latter will perform an audiogram and accurately establish the diagnosis of the loss of decibels. Subsequently, the wearing of a hearing aid will be prescribed. Depending on the degree of presbycusis, a hearing aid or hearing aid (for more advanced cases) may also be prescribed.

Note that the audioprosthetist will help you choose the aid best suited to your budget and your needs. Of course, he will make the adjustments.

How to treat presbycusis?
There are no medications to cure hearing loss. If you have it, the ideal option will depend on the severity of the disorder, your age, and your general health.

Wearing a hearing aid is the most common treatment for presbycusis. It is sometimes accompanied by the learning and practice of lip-reading techniques.

How to prevent presbycusis?
Age-related hearing loss is irreversible. But if your auditory system is healthy, the pathology will occur late.

To delay or prevent presbycusis, the only real prevention is to take care of your ears. Here are the best solutions to avoid it:
– if you are in a very noisy environment, always wear hearing protection or a helmet;
– lower the volume of the music played in the earphones and headsets;
– in case of discharge or pain coming from the ear, consult a doctor quickly;
– do not introduce any liquid or object into the ear canal, with the exception of products medically designed for cleaning the ears;
– consume products rich in Omega-3 for their antioxidant benefits;
– give priority to careful drying and gentle cleaning of the external canal of the ear.
