At the global level Toyota has been a pioneering brand in the development of electrified vehicles. In 1997 it presented the first commercial hybrid in history, the Toyota Prius, which in 2009 became the first hybrid in Latin America. In 2019, it presented the Corolla Hybrid, the first hybrid vehicle manufactured in the region, at the plant in Brazil.
To date, Toyota has sold more than 20 million electrified vehicles, including hybrids, plug-in hybrids, electrical already hydrogen. Compared with conventional motorization, the combined use of these vehicles achieved an estimated saving of 65 billion liters of fuel, equivalent to saving 160 million tons of CO2. In Guatemala, 56% of the electrified vehicles sold during 2022 were Toyota or Lexus hybrids.

Increase interest and purchase of electrified vehicles in the country
In Guatemala, in recent years it has been possible to notice the growing effect on the sales of electrified vehicles. This is due to a greater supply in the market and lower prices that benefit the consumer. Sales of electrified vehicles are 96% concentrated in hybrid or plug-in hybrid vehicles.
Even though vehicle sales are increasing year following year, they are still very low compared to the total vehicle market. In Guatemala, there is no infrastructure developed so that brands like Toyota can expand their offer of electrified vehicles. This is because the infrastructure is very limited. Toyota currently has 38 charging points throughout the country and a very large investment is required to open more points. The best current and short-term alternative is to expand electrification through self-recharging hybrid vehicles, since they do not require additional infrastructure.
Where is Toyota going?
Toyota’s primary focus is on hybrid, plug-in hybrid, electric and hydrogen vehicles. That is why Toyota Guatemala offers 6 models in the product range and 4 launches this year for a total of 10. Additionally, 4 models in Lexus with a new launch in the year to reach 5 electrified alternatives.
Toyota and Lexus Guatemala offer the largest portfolio of electrified vehicles, representing 56% of the new vehicle market. Among the line-up offered by Toyota Guatemala are Corolla, C-HR, Corolla Cross, Rav4, Sequoia and Tundra (4 new models to be introduced). On the Lexus side: UX, NX, RX and LC (a new model to be introduced).
Toyota’s commitment to carbon neutrality encompasses all of the company’s operations and extends to the entire useful life of its vehicles, from the sourcing of materials, manufacturing, use and maintenance, to recycling and final disposal. Its commitment is also to contribute to the transition towards sustainable mobility, together with the rest of the value chain and society as a whole.
