Linz (OTS) – There are only a few eyewitnesses who can report on the terror of the Nazis. Generations of the oppressed, the persecuted, relatives and other victims – but also followers and perpetrators – have made a significant contribution to coming to terms with the crimes, investigating the causes and above all to the culture of remembrance in recent decades. Soon there will be no more contemporary witnesses. The possibility of experiencing things first-hand is history. At that point, at the latest, it is our responsibility to carry on their memories, their experiences, their admonishing words and their legacy, to inform future generations regarding the history and the dangers and to present all the findings to them as warning examples. Not only memorial associations, historians or politicians are required to ensure that such crimes are not repeated. It is also the responsibility of politics to create the framework conditions for an appropriate culture of remembrance and further processing of history. In the end, however, every single citizen is needed so that history never repeats itself. Die-hard ideologies must be countered with knowledge and humanity.
