SO, Seedromantic comedy or homosexual story?
Mary Butterfly: Les deux is a love story between two women, once morest a backdrop of comedy. For the first time, we give visibility to a homosexual couple without it being a subject.
Did your character charm you?
Yes immediately. As soon as I read the script, I wanted to play Lucie, this investigative journalist, who is gradually giving up on her professional ambitions. She is combative, determined, and at the same time touching, because she is ready to do anything to start a family with Inès. I hope that it will be able to give strength to all these women, alone or in couple, who have a desire for children and wish to resort to PMA. It’s a subject that has always been close to my heart, to be able to represent these women through a fictional character.
This is your first leading role in the cinema…
I am very happy that Éloïse Lang trusted me for her third feature film. Lucie goes through different emotional phases throughout the story: humor, confusion, excitement, joy and anger. The challenge for me was to succeed in interpreting everything as accurately as possible.
How did you appropriate this character?
Lucie is not so far from me because these issues of lesbian minority are present in my daily life, I have relatives who do this process, or even who want children alone so I evolve in this sphere, that closer to my character.
How do we see the desire for children today?
I think that we ask ourselves more the question (in France) of the desire to have a child, and no longer according to an established societal pattern. It becomes a desire, not a duty! Today, women can have a child on their own, freeze their eggs, start a family as they see fit, give themselves some time, have recourse to medically assisted procreation or, on the contrary, decide not to have one. It is already an evolution, even if there is still work and too little visibility on the subject.
How did you view motherhood when you were a child?
I thought : ” Oh lazy! » (laughter). Honestly, I did not project myself into motherhood because I had no role model. Since, apparently, it was a dad and a mom, then I will not have children. Unconsciously growing up I may have forbidden myself to project myself.
Finished, invisibility?
I hope ! There are more and more LGBTQIA+ people in fiction, whether it’s movies or series. This representation is necessary to move things forward, and allow everyone to identify and build themselves serenely. We live in a patriarchal world, with a lot of sexism and homophobia. By participating in this type of project, we contribute to changing mentalities.
What’s next for you?
I want to continue to play roles in the cinema, without locking myself into a particular genre, whether it’s an action film, a comedy or an auteur film. It’s an exciting job, I still have a lot to learn, I can’t wait for what’s next.
