“Floods and Landslides in Rwanda: Devastation and Recovery Efforts”

2023-05-04 15:17:41

On Tuesday May 2, floods and landslides occurred in northern and western Rwanda, particularly in the Rubavu district. At least 130 people were killed, according to the Rwandan government. The torrential rains that caused the floods also caused the destruction of houses. Roads have been cut and fields completely flooded. Several evacuation operations are underway and some reception centers have already been created for Rwandan survivors.

These events are frequent during the rainy season in East Africa. Seasonal rains also killed six people in Uganda. By May 2020, at least 65 people had died in Rwanda, hit by heavy seasonal rains.
